ACC is on a mission.

ACC is currently targeting commercial fitout businesses and changing levy codes… not always for the better.

The thing with changing levy codes is that ACC does not actually need to chat with you. The good news is they typically do. The bad news is that questions get loaded to suit the answer which typically means your levy code gets changed to a more expensive alternative. The double bad news is that ACC typically changes the current year and the previous year. Please note though, ACC can backdate up to 5 years although we have not seen this happen before.

What can you do?

1. Make sure the team who typically answer the phone at your work are aware that ACC may phone.

2. Should ACC phone, no answers should be given to questions over the phone. Get ACC to email any questions first. Treat it like any legal interaction.

3. When answering the questions, less is more. We are not suggesting you lie, rather, answer the question in short succinct answers.

What we are seeing is that businesses are being moved from a construction project management related code to a specific trade focused code like plastering (0.11% of payroll to 1.92% pf payroll). Or even a code that covers businesses who sub out all the trades work to a trades based code (0.43% of payroll to 1.92% of payroll).

In all cases, substantial increases!
